Things to see and do in Aberystwyth

This masterpiece of engineering is full of history and use to carry lead ore, timber and passenger traffic, back in 1902. 3. Aberystwyth Castle
Aberystwyth Castle is full of history, making it a great place to visit. The fortification which dominates the skyline of Aberystwyth, reminds everyone of the skills of the castle’s ancient builders. The first Norman castle was built in the 12th Century and the timber and earth defences showed that it was too vulnerable and a new site was chosen for a castle in Aberystwyth itself.

The last castle to be built in Aberystwyth once was the greatest in Wales, but now lies entirely ruined only offering a slight image of its once impressive but dark past.

4. Aberystwyth Cliff Railway

Aberystwyth Cliff Railway situates within the northern end of Aberystwyth promenade, Constitution Hill and rises high from the sea, offering amazing views down into the town, Cardigan Bay and even the mountain peaks of Wales – if it’s a bright day!

If you’re visiting Aberystwyth, don’t miss out on this unique cliff railway ride where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful panoramas of Wales and beyond.

The railway has been open to visitors since opening in 1896 and after refurbishments, the train station has been completed offering much better protection from the weather elements and structure to ensure a better visitor experience.

 Once you’ve reached the top, you can see the stunning views afforded by one of the world’s largest camera obscurers, offering an amazing bird’s eye view of sea and landscape! There are many historical displays to see, as well as a gift shop and a café selling delicious local, handmade food and refreshments.

5. Haford Uchtryd

Haford Uchtryd is located 12 miles south east of Aberystwyth and is known as one of the most beautiful examples in Europe, which offers many picturesque landscapes. The owner of Haford Uchtryd, Thomas Johnes built a new house in its location and laid out its grounds in a manner for displaying its natural beauties. He also used the land for farming, forestry and gardening. Hafod became a popular destination in the early tourist years of Wales.

The estate now has some 200 hectares of the Ystwyth valley and surrounding countryside. It is most owned by Natural Resources Wales, joint with the Hafod Trust and manages a restoration and conservation project with private and public funding.

It is popular with walkers and tourists, especially during the summer months, so why not take a trip to the estate? There is so much scenery to discover and explore in Wales!
